The Day that We'll Never Forget

Every year for the past 20 years, this day causes a flood of emotions for me and pretty much everyone I know. September 11th will haunt us for all time I believe. Today I decided to try to not remember all the sadness of that day so long ago.

Instead, I thought about the beautiful things that happened. The way that we as Americans, became one. We prayed for one another, and we checked on each other. We bought American flags and proudly flew them in our yards.

I remember that my son was a Webelo in Cub Scouts and we were going to be marching in our local Holiday parade that year, and the theme was Peace on Earth. So I made a Paper Mache Dove with a 6-foot wing span that sat on top of a globe, as our float rode down the street, the wings of the dove gently flapped, It was truly beautiful. Our float won first prize in the youth division. As our boys walk behind the float carrying their flags, the crowd clapped. It was a proud moment for those boys and a humbling one for the leaders.

I choose to remember that even in the midst of the evil that had befallen us, we stood, we cared, and we let love overrule hate.

These are the things I have chosen to focus on today. We chose love.
